Losing My Touch?
Leslie and I saw a screening of Helvetica, a documentary by Gary Huswit. In the film, Gary talks with Design icons like Eric Spiekerman, Michael Beirut, Stephan Sagmeister, David Carson and many others. The idea behind the film is finding out how one font became so ubiquitous.
As great as the film was, I found myself getting upset during the viewing because I realized that I believe I’m losing my connection with design because of the work I’m currently doing. Magazine design can be fulfilling, but when you continue to do the same magazine month after month, year after year, I start to operate on auto pilot instead of being engaged with the design.
When I started in this industry, I used to disect design whenever I saw it. I could spot fonts and design styles, even could tell you who designed something based strictly on style, but I’ve lost that a bit now. I’m just not on my game anymore and I believe it has something to do with not being actively involved in new design.
Time for a change. Time to get back to the passion behind why I became a designer in the first place. Doing some compelling work is long overdue. I think before I resigned myself to not doing anything more than boring editorial work, but I just can’t see that happening anymore.
Enough typing. I need to get to work.
